How to

Using waste yarn and Provisional cast-on method, cast on 18 [22, 26, 30] sts.

Change to main yarn and work Garter Stitch (knit every stitch) until work measures approximately 12 [14, 16, 18] in/30.5 [35.5, 40.5, 45.75] cm

Finishing
Carefully remove provisional cast-on stitch by stitch, transferring live stitches to 2nd needle.

When preparing 2 sets of live stitches for garter stitch grafting, you want to ensure that both sets of stitches are in the right position. With right sides facing and wrong sides together (ready to graft) the front set should be ridge high (bumps to the needle) and the rear set ridge low ('V's to the needle).

Grafting Garter Stitch is different to Stocking Stitch – with this method what you do on the front needle you also do on the back needle.

Graft all stitches from top to bottom as shown in the illustrated tutorial on the next page.

Weave in all ends.

At this point, you can finish the top of the Hat in any way you choose!

Fold Hat in half and seam right across for a square top. Alternatively, place a slip stitch in the middle to mark the centre, then bring the point of each opposite edge to the centre. Fold each section then slip stitch across to create a 4 point finish.
