Pattern notes
This pattern was designed using handspun yarn – you can of course use any yarn that knits to gauge.
The simplicity of the structure allows for all sorts of creativity with yarn – use self striping or variegated yarns. Maybe something with a texture – a boucle or similar. All that matters is that the Brim fits well – beyond that, the Body section is a tube that’s grafted and sewn down, and there’s lots of room to play there!
How to
Using smaller needles and Alternate Cable Cast-on method, cast-on 80 [86, 92] sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist sts. Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.
Brim
Now work K1tbl, P1 rib for 1.25 [1.5, 1.5] in/3.25 [3.75, 3.75] cm (or desired length)
Change to larger needles needles.
Body
Rnd 1: Purl all sts
Rnd 2: Knit all sts
Repeat Rnd 2, creating stocking stitch in the round, until work measures 7 [8, 9] in/ 17.75 [20.25, 22.75] cm from the start of the Body section (or desired length)
Crown
Divide stitches evenly across 2 needles, fold Hat in half so that it is flat and using kitchener stitch, close the top. Then bring each corner inside the Hat and join with a slip stitch to finish and create the 'envelope' finish.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. A gentle wash and blocking is required to help the stitches settle and the crown lay flat.
