Description

Funky Flapper is a top down earflap Hat in stocking stitch. It has a fitted crown and includes an optional I-cord detail. The earflaps are shaped centrally creating a decorative effect. The pattern is designed for variegated yarn.

M1: pick up the horizontal loop before the next stitch, place it onto the left needle and knit into the back of it

k2tog: knit next 2sts together

SSK: slip next 2 sts knitwise, then knit these 2 sts together through the backs of the loops

How to

I-cord version

Cast on 3sts and work I-cord for 3in/7.5cm

Inc Rnd: Knit into the front and back of each st [6sts]

Join in the round, taking care not to twist the sts.

Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.

Plain crown version

Cast on 6sts. Join in the round, taking care not to twist the sts. Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.

Crown

Rnd 1: Knit into the front and back of each stitch [12sts]

Rnd 2: *K1, M1, K1; rpt from * to end [18sts]

Rnd 3: *K1, M1, K2; rpt from * to end [24sts]

Rnd 4: *K1, M1, K3; rpt from * to end [30sts]

Rnd 5: *K1, M1, K4; rpt from * to end [36sts]

Rnd 6: *K1, M1, K5; rpt from * to end [42sts]

Rnd 7: *K1, M1, K6; rpt from * to end [48sts]

Rnd 8: *K1, M1, K7; rpt from * to end [54sts]

Rnd 9: *K1, M1, K8; rpt from * to end [60sts]

Carry on in this fashion, increasing 6sts per round, until you have 78 [84, 90] sts

Body

Work Stocking Stitch (knit every round) until work measures 4.25 [4.5. 4.75] in/10.75 [11.5, 12] cm from last increase round.

Earflaps

Next Rnd: K27 [29, 31], cast off 24 [26, 28] sts, K27 [29, 31], remove stitch marker, K27 [29, 31] [54, 58, 62 sts]

Work 3 [3, 5] rows of Stocking Stitch

Next Row: K 17 [17, 19] (2nd earflap), cast off 20 [24, 24] sts, K 17 [17, 19] (1st earflap).

Without breaking the yarn, turn and work on the 1st earflap first.

Row 1: Purl all sts

Row 2: Knit all sts

Row 3: Purl all sts

20in and 22in size now jump to Row 6, 24in size continue with Row 4.

Row 4: K7, ssk, K1, k2tog, K7 [17 sts]

Row 5 and all remaining odd numbered rows: Purl all sts

Row 6: K6, ssk, K1, k2tog, K6 [15 sts]

Row 8: K5, ssk, K1, k2tog, K5 [13 sts]

Row 10: K4, ssk, K1, k2tog, K4 [11 sts]

Row 12: K3, ssk, K1, k2tog, K3 [9 sts]

Row 14: K2, ssk, K1, k2tog, K2 [7 sts]

Cast off remaining 3 sts.

2nd earflap

Rejoin yarn to wrong side of work. Starting with a purl row, work exactly the same as first earflap.

Finishing

Using a crochet hook and leftover yarn, work UK - dc/US – sc all the way round the edge. (optional)

Weave in all ends and lightly block. Lay Hat flat to block and rotate whilst drying to avoid the occurrence of pressed edges.
