In the great re-photographing project, Dutrieu is another design to get a fresh new look.

Our model wears the Dutrieu cloche Hat in variegated shades of pinks and purples. It’s a front facing view with the model looking off to her right.

As much as I love a detailed wall or mural, sometimes a plain background is just what a Hat and model need.

I didn’t re-knit this sample, it’s the same one using Cloudborn sock yarn. What I like about these photos is how they show off the way this design works with the self-striping yarn - the lighting and environment is much improved on our first photos.

One magical thing about knitting sideways, especially in garter stitch, is the way that pooling in self-striping or variegated yarns behaves. Pooling isn’t always a desired effect and there are ways to manage it in vertical knitting, but it comes into it’s own when worked sideways.

Because the Hats are constructed from panels that are repeated over and over, a kaleidoscope effect is created. If the yarn pools in one panel it’ll pool in the next, creating an all-over pattern. Sometimes the yarn has pooled one way in one panel then the opposite in the next which is very cool.

Looking at the crown on Dutrieu we can see that the pooling changes within the crown, that there’s more frequent peaks one side that gradually reduce around the Hat. This happens because of the increases that occur around the edge of the Hat that creates the asymmetrical brim. As the body of the fabric grows on one side, it slowly and incrementally changes the way the yarn pools, which in turn alters the pattern created by the yarn at the crown.

As I keep saying, sideways knit Hats are so magical! Well, it’s not magic but maths, same difference. You really can’t go wrong with a sideways Hat when you’ve an opinionated skein in need of a project.
