Quality Control

Every Woolly Wormhead pattern goes through rigorous testing to ensure that it not only reads well and makes sense, but also that is error free. This process is outlined below.

Test Knitting

I have a wonderful group of test knitters who work on my patterns, providing detailed and thorough feedback. Their job is varied, and includes some of the following:

  • trying the patterns in different types of yarn, to see how this affects things like row gauge or fit
  • checking the pattern for clarity in terms of how the instructions are presented, and suggesting possible improvements to the wording
  • ensuring each size works as intended - every size in each of my premium patterns is test knitted
  • test knitters review the patterns prior to tech editing, and always see the pattern in the final layout and may comment on chart positioning and other aspects of the presentation.

Technical Editing

Whilst my free patterns are generally only test knit, all of my premium patterns - both single patterns and those in collections - are checked by a tech editor. Their job involves the following:

  • a tech editor not only checks the wording and punctuation, but they also check all the maths and ensure that the numbers add up. They do not knit each pattern, but instead read it as it is written, technically.
  • each single pattern is checked by 2 different tech editors, to ensure we catch even the tiniest of errors. Each tech editor is familiar with different terminologies (UK vs US) so they ensure that the patterns are clear to different markets.
  • book patterns generally go through 3 levels of tech editing. They are initially edited straight after testing. They are then edited again as they are added to the book layout, to ensure no errors have crept in at this stage, and then the final level checks everything to make sure all previous errors have been corrected.
  • the tech editors also review each pattern should it have a change in publication, i.e. it is included in a new collection.
  • they will also review a pattern should a difficult error occur, and together we will work through a particularly challenging problem.
  • my first published single patterns were only reviewed by one tech editor, yet many have since had a 2nd or even 3rd revision

We are only Human

Despite all of this work, errors still occur because we are only human. Everyone makes mistakes and no-one can catch all of them all of the time. Should you find an error in one of my patterns, then please either email me or post in the specific thread on the Raverly forum. I dread hearing about errors in my patterns as much as anyone, but the sooner I know about them, the sooner they can be fixed.

It should also be noted that patterns published by 3rd parties may contain errors for other reasons, and I cannot be responsible for those. However, both myself and the publisher are keen to hear if you find an error in a published work.

All know errors are listed on the Errata page, and that page is updated as and when new errors are found.
