Let me introduce Encircle, the design that was this year's Mystery Hat-a-Long:

The full and complete file was uploaded this morning, and all KAL participants have received their email link to download the pattern. The final pattern comes in a range of 5 sizes, includes charts as well as written instructions, and also includes illustrated tutorials for the provisional cast-on and cable bind-off. The price has also reverted to £3.

There are lots of little details about this Hat that please me, and the gathered crown is one of them. So simple yet so effective, and done in such a way without any of the bulk that a standard gathered crown can give you. Another clever aspect is the way the brim is constructed and how it develops into the body - it gives a really neat finish and I suspect I may use that method again somewhere else.

I'll freely admit that I was a little anxious about this year's KAL... Mystery KALs always bring a bit of anxiety as you never really know whether folks will like what you've created. It's a lot of work to prepare it all; for it to run smoothly a lot more preparation and explanation is needed, way more than a regular pattern. And this year there was only one pattern, not two, and it's a little bit different to previous styles. Infact, my approach to the construction and notes was also a bit different, too. Yet judging by the forum comments, it's gone down pretty well, and that's made me happy!

The name for this design is self explanatory, although the name eluded me right up until a few days ago, as I've used circular themes perhaps a little too much and am running out of options! I do rather love those little circular cables. It was really the yarn that decided the direction the pattern would take - it's subtle colours and great stitch definition suited these soft cables, and of course a sports weight is perfect doubled up for a warm brim without being too bulky or excessive. I can highly recommend the Wool Dispensary's Useful Restorative sports weight - it's lovely stuff. And they're lovely folks, too.

And with that, the Mystery KAL is over for another year. It always makes a little sad to see it finish, but it's oh so worth it and seeing all those finished Hats and happy Hat wearers? That can't be beat.

Thank you to everyone who took part!
