New yarn & new ideas
Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 9:57AM During Ravelry Day back in the beginning of June, I had the chance to meet new contacts and make new friends in the yarn business, as well as catch up with old friends. One of those I met is the marketing manager for Jamieson & Smith, and after some chatting one thing led to another, and I was set a challenge.
My mission: to design something different with these yarns.

These are all Shetland Aran, a weight I'm pretty comfortable with. The first two are naturals and I think they'll provide the biggest challenge - I'm thinking cables. The dark grey and the purple are already talking to me and ideas are forming for new designs, yet the oatmeal is a different game altogether - that one will need to grow on me before it says what it wants to be. I think it wants to be a men's Hat, but that's all I know so far.
I'm fairly sure I can give them something different, I can do non-traditional, right? I'm thinking Hats that work with the properties of these yarns yet offer a modern twist... and cables. I'm thinking texture that travels around the surface.
It's been quite some time since I've worked with Shetland yarn and I am *so* looking forward to it. Wish me luck with my challenge!

Isn't that purple a beautiful colour! Looking forward to seeing what you're going to come up with. I love looking at all the fields in Britain at the moment, so many colours and textures, specially now that they've started harvesting - if I was a designer (which I'm really really not), I'd constantly be using those textures.
What beautiful colours! I"m sure they will prove inspirational, I'm looking forward to seeing the end result.
Wow.. those are gorgeous. I love the purple & I really love cables done in that tweedy rustic looking gray. Can't wait to see what you design!
oh yes! traveling cables - like the bus winding through the "old country" :)
How exciting. For some weird reason, the oatmeal yarn make me think of cathedral architecture, especially arches and flying butresses. (But I'm weird like that!)
god I love that purple!
I can't wait to see what you produce.
For me the grey cries out for a lovely generously proportioned cable whereas the oatmeal is all about texture.
The purple is lovely too.
Hey there. I just found your site for the first time, and I really enjoy it! Thanks for creating such an amazing space on the net! Love the patterns...
Hey missus, how you doing! I am now living in Scotland so these yarns are a little more local to me than they once were. I really like them, I'm a fan of traditional yarns because in many ways I think their reliability and flexibility means there is much more scope for interesting design. Cables for the natural colours are definitely a good idea I would say. Hope all is well with you, Helen x
Hmmmm........
Was Connie true to her word and were they wrapped in beer??
hehehe
That purple is lovely......tweedy and rich.
I can't wait to see how you manipulate these yarrrns!
